Dear Councillor Jones,
I write on behalf of the Universities & Colleges Employers Association, an organisation that has now been based in Bloomsbury, on Tavistock Square, for twenty years.
Like many businesses in London, a growing number of our employees cycle to work. A larger proportion of our team would cycle to the office if they felt comfortable and safe on the roads. Our employees are also users of the pedestrian space in Bloomsbury and regularly cross Tavistock/Torrington Place to use and support the businesses in Marchmont Street and the Brunswick Centre .
We value their safety and we want to promote active lifestyles for all our employees. We support their freedom to choose how they get to work. We also note strong evidence that more cycling increases spending in local retail businesses and lowers air pollution levels.
As a business we have been delighted to see the long overdue improvements for cycling in Tavistock/Torrington Place. Our employees have also described the huge improvement for the pedestrian experience of these roads since the trial scheme was put in place.
The excellent provision for cycling in the Tavistock/Torrington Place trial scheme will help us attract and retain the employees our business needs to continue to thrive. Schemes like this make London a more attractive city in which to build and run our business.
The scheme is, on balance, excellent for our business and for London. Please ensure that it is retained.
